Quick and dirty day after thoughts
Jan. 21st, 2009 09:37 amDoods, seriously, yesterday was made of win. On so so many fronts. *dances with glee*
I'm still in a tremendous mood and all the forces of nature willing, I'll keep that for just a little while longer. *crosses fingers*
That being said, I have a few caveats:
1. There is a SHITLOAD of work for this administration to do. The sheer amount of upfuckedness this country is in is truly staggering. I know this. You, dear flist, know this too. Obama is not the next coming. He is a man. A historic man, a smart man, a damned sexy man, but a man none the less.
2. It's not really all that clear at the moment how difficult it will be for Mr. Obama to forge a sense of bi-partisanship in the new administration. It is only the day after, after all, but I'm interested to see how much heel dragging the Repubs indulge in.
3. There will be failures. There will be losses. This is true of every President's administration. And it will continue to be true for the life of this democracy. As Illdoctrine said, the work is never done because we are human and our institutions are a reflection of our imperfections.
And in light of the recent and very charged race debates surrounding certain SF writers around here on lj, I'd like to suggest something that one of those commenters said to me: We have to learn to fail better.
Not fail less. Not be perfect. But fail BETTER.
And maybe that's something we can incorporate into our judgment process, or observations. Not, did he handle that correctly, but did he accomplish something with less fail than there might have been? I'm even having a hard time putting this into words. That's how difficult this is. Shades of gray and taking each issue and decision on its own merits, inside its own context. Perhaps that's something to try for.
In conclusion: WELCOME, MR. PRESIDENT. PLEASE FAIL BETTER. LOVE CFJ.
