Oct. 5th, 2006 11:22 amIf you're in TPM fandom you probably want to know that Pumpkin's site is going down or is now down.
Also, I've heard that other authors are taking their work down from the MA website because they felt they need more control over their work.
I can't say I blame them. Site searches that go to old websites quote clips of the old content so that if you're looking for a story, the advertising page will come up on the search. That just sounds like a recipe for disaster.
It makes me sad to see this happening. There will be a next new thing. A next new way to share stories and squee over fannish stuff.
Until then, we'll just have to make do with what's on our hard drives and what we can share with each other. I feel like it's a bit like Fahrenheit 451. Our stories go further underground and harder to find which makes us feel safer. And some of us are here because we like the marginalized quality to what we do. And the more visibile it is the less marginal it is. Or the more visible the consequences are.
I can understand all of this. I have great memories of reading stories I loved in TPM. By many of the authors who are leaving the more visible parts of fandom. I will miss them. And hope that at some point, we'll see them come back in a form we have access to again.
