I have a number of google alerts. Many you can probably guess at, that's right. Lotrips boys. And Alatriste. That sort of thing.
I get a number of alerts in any given hour or day. Lots of them. Google alerts are email notifications of a name, phrase or something when that word or name is published on the internet. Everything from movie reviews to gossip pieces and, until now, they've all come from news papers.

Imagine my surprise when I got a google alert for Eric Bana when his name was in a description for a story on Fellow_shippers.

o.O

That's right. Google alerts are now searching blogs. Livejournals as well.

So I guess now we'll see people pulling their blogs down because they don't want to come up on a google alert.

More fic goes bye bye.

*is sad*

ETA: I just got a google alert for my journal entry. :(

I know!

Is that what happened? I wondered why all of a sudden my Bana-alerts doubled in number and why I got porn ;).

Doesn't friend locking it solve that issue? Either way, it is weird...

I don't know about friends locking. I would hope that would do it. But I'd hate to see every piece of fiction get friendslocked. Maybe there's a way to opt out of the search engine?
Imagine some 12 year old getting a google alert and having it be porn!?!
I mean, we'd all be busted. Or am I being paranoid?

A lot of people already lock their journals. And yes, it would be a shame if that went on. Because one of the fun things about having a journal in the first place, is for sharing and getting opinions on your work! And to read other peoples work.

Not sure what you main with busted though. I'm not that savvy on internet laws so I don't know if publishing your own porn is illigal ;). Honestly, I think that as long as you rate the story and put it under a cut it should be okay. I have a sneaking suspicion that most kids find out about porn from finding their fathers badly hidden stash ;).

Sometimes being paranoid pays off. It could be called careful!

I think that being busted means there being a general uproar. The public eye is anethma to the slash universe. Also, there are copyright issues for some. I write rps so for me it's only libel except that I label all my stuff as fiction which should protect me.
Btw: how did you stumble across my post? Just curious. I've not seen your name before.

Aha! Slash, yeah I learned what that term means a couple of months ago! Gues how I found you? Bana-alert! Hahahaha! I wanted to know what was up with all this livejournal entries popping up in the alerts!

Most of the livejournal entries I comment on I find by reading through the friendsentries at http://blacklabtx.livejournal.com. Funny stuf sometimes.

Anyway, do people even know that when they post publicly, there stuf goes outside LJ?

That's why I posted about it. To let people know and to generate a conversation about it.
BTW: I actually write banaslash. But only now just. I've mostly written VigOrli and Stargate.
With a side dish of Qui-gon/Obi-wan from The Phantom Menace.
So, now you know. I'd say, if you don't want to read Bana-lisciousnous, i.e., banabuttsex, you'd best stay away from lj entries.

Re: I know!
Experience has certainly taught me to keep my eyes open. And to not click on everything that says Bana. But that is hard. Cause I likes me a lot of Bana ;).

One of the good things about things like livejournal is that people feel more at ease about talking to each other. A lot of things you would not talk about with the family over coffee is okay here. The down side is, that not everybody knows how to handle that. I have no issues with slash. It is not my thing, but a lot of people probably enjoy it. And written word in general is what I have a weakspot for. So as long as you are clear about things like ratings and disclaimers...

I do think you have a point though. It is good for people to realise that they might feel like they are posting to a small community. But in reality, you have no idea as to who is reading what! I probably would not have come across your journal if not for the Bana-alert thing!

It won't just be porn-writers (of all kinds) who find this development worrying, but also people who write other stuf and people who do graphics might feel like it will become even easier to rip their work off.

And as a reciever of the Google alerts, I don't know what to do with many of them. Very interested in news and reviews, not so much need to know what some stranger somewhere thinks of him...

So, this new thing with Google, don't know yet where I stand on it. I just hope it doesn't stop people from being creative in their own way.

I noticed some folks talking about it on lj so it's at least getting around now. I'm sure people will do what makes them feel comfortable.
As to artists, yeah. And writers. It's beginning to be more visible.
So things are going to happen. Just don't know what yet.
I can understand the bana thing. I adore him. I'm writing him right now as a matter of fact. He's so fun to play with.
heheheh. In the writing sort of way.

I wish there was a way to have a discussion about it that was calm like this instead of wanky. I fear sounding like a privileged brat, demanding access to all the stories I want. And yet, I can't help but feel as though this is a 'shared' universe. Do we owe each other nothing? are we just meaningless reader/feedback drones? I just don't know where to put this in my psyche. Does that make sense?
