Long ago, in a Los Angeles far far away...I used to hang with friends now lost to the mists of time and for hours I would read Grimjack.

I've been thinking about John Gaunt for a few months now because I find I'm drawn to damaged heroes. I look back on my past obsessions: Errol Flynn, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Grimjack, Supernatural and find lots very damaged, morally grey, tragic characters. G.I. Jane. Balian. Aragorn. I remember falling for Errol Flynn when I was around 8 or so. Robin Hood and Don Juan. Rule breakers. I don't think I have much to say about it beside noticing that I was probably pretty depressed from a very young age and it's always the bad boys, isn't it? I mean, the list is amazingly long and totally populated with broken, beaten down characters who've had the shit kicked out of them and still managed to overcome.

While writing my Sweet Charity, I've found that I've begun working on another damaged character and it's like coming home. Without spoiling it too much, I'm working on re-write of The Quiet Man set in the TPM universe with Qui-gon as the battered warrior returning to the planet of his origins only to fall headlong in love with a lovely red haired shepherd boy named Obi-wan amidst the tragicomical dynamic of a small agricultural community filled with odd and funny characters.

Tangentially, I made myself an SPN mix tape and, of course, I picked all the SAD songs. Carry On, Silent Lucidity, Rising Son, Crossroad Blues.

And even when I TRY to pick happy themed things? It just feels wrong

I'm totally doomed. Just call me Eyeore.

I think we're twins separated at birth. I always go for the sad, eerie and creepy songs over the upbeat, happy and, you know, normal ones. And I love damaged, tortured heroes. I've never even heard of Grimjack, but he looks frighteningly like Robert E. Howard's Solomon Kane.

Yes, sort of similar to Kane though much more Dean like. I'm looking to read them again. I wonder if they sell them? Such great stuff. *smishes my sister in creepy-ness*

Hiya Eeyore *squish* I think I am getting what you mean, very, VERY well, lol! I am sort of always waiting for someone to comment saying; Good God woman, enough with the disgusting dark, angsty stories already! There are probably lovely psychological things we could say about this strange need for sadness, but meh *shrugs* Let's just savour it ;)

Yeah, I say it's a sort of specialization. Seems like there's plenty of schmoop out there without my adding some. Not that I do it well at all. I pay a LOT of money to work out my darkness but I guess I'm as you say, learning to savour it. *smishes you*
