Mississippi Legislature Ponders Bill that would force Restaurants to refuse service to obese customers

Text of bill no 282

Synopsis:
Title: AN ACT TO PROHIBIT CERTAIN FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS FROM SERVING FOOD TO ANY PERSON WHO IS OBESE, BASED ON CRITERIA PRESCRIBED BY THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH; TO DIRECT THE DEPARTMENT TO PREPARE WRITTEN MATERIALS THAT DESCRIBE AND EXPLAIN THE CRITERIA FOR DETERMINING WHETHER A PERSON IS OBESE AND TO PROVIDE THOSE MATERIALS TO THE FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS; TO DIRECT THE DEPARTMENT TO MONITOR THE FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS FOR COMPLIANCE WITH THE PROVISIONS OF THIS ACT; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

Though it looks like lawmakers will kill it before it sees daylight

But what really bothers me is the presumption that anyone can or should legislate someone else's health and worse than that, that the state is involved. Yes, the state has repeatedly legislated the health of women and people of color. This just seems to add a whole level of crazy ass-ness to that whole world view.

Although this study seems to suggest that obesity is less expensive in health care dollars than presumably more 'healthy' slender people.

I wish I had more cohesive thoughts on this but I seem to be in a pure reaction mode right now.

legislating health? yeah, I like it when I don't die from someone else's ill health. but this is so far past illegal it doesn't have a prayer.

totally. it looks like it won't even get to the floor of the legislature but still, the idea that someone did this just makes me despair for america.

Well intentioned? I think this is blatant hatred. it's wrapped in pretty pink 'we care for you because you obviously don't care for yourself' paper, but this is just another kind of intolerance. Which, you know, I was thinking isn't limited to a geographical area, but seems more attached to certain 'ways of thinking'. Some people just think they know what's right for other people. Which I totally disagree with. I can never know what's right for someone else. That's a level of presumption that I've fought very hard to stay away from.

I would enjoy feeling shock about this more if I felt any shock about this. At the moment, I'm not even WTFing, because this legislation isn't all that shocking in a world in which I cannot open a newspaper or webpage without hearing that I am Fat and going to Die and if I don't DIE, I will cost some poor, aggrieved thin person money to keep alive, yadda yadda, etc.

Yes, sadly, this is true. It's like that song, my give a damn is broken. Well, maybe that's why I was having a hard time being coherent, because my outrage was broken by the Bush regime a long time ago.

*will not break godwin's law* but are manditory health camps far behind? I know they aren't really. I guess I thought we'd come a bit further than that.
