Mar. 17th, 2009 09:02 pmYou know how fantastic the movie Surf's Up is?
Let me tell you.
First, the folks who made this film LOVE surfing. I spent a few years watching surf films and surf shows. Reading surf sites and even trying my hand. You can tell the folks who made Surf's Up watched those shows too. And tried it. Each scene of the film is a brilliant riff on documentary film making and documentary vision. The vintage look sections of the film are pure surf films of the 40's and 50's. Pure. Surfing. *LOVES*
And the film makers pioneered a technique where they mounted the camera on an actor with a feed to a computer environment so they could create a 360 world of animation. Take some time when you rent the film to watch the extras and you can see how much a labor of love this film is.
And the score is pure surf song.
And I simply CANNOT watch without getting happy. Without feeling that sense of being on the water. The hugeness. The silence and the roar. It's an odd convergence and yet so very true. There's a massive heaving that when you're in it, you feel so bouyant and so small. It makes me feel less heavy.
Here's a good example of some classic surf footage from the sixties.
And here's an excellent trailer for the film featuring a great montage of vintage style clips.
I mean, come on, how could you NOT love that?
The commitment it took to get things right? That's love, baby. LOVE.
ETA: Just a little context. Some big wave surfing. Just...give it a sec and then marvel at the SCALE.
Fuck. Yeah.
ETA2: The MASTERS of surfing.
Feel the love.
