oh Media, why you so distracting?
May. 19th, 2009 10:01 amFirst off, Star Trek. So. Much. Love. I loved TOS, watched it as a kid in the sixties, in re-runs in the 70's, watched every spin off with the possible exception of Enterprise, mostly because I'd moved on to other parts of life. I read a few novels, cruised comics randomly and yes, did see Trekies. That's forty odd years of ST fandom. And I do understand the sanctity of original canon. But, if there was ever a canon that needed new juice, this would have to be it. J.J. killed off original canon, or, more likely made it into an au time line, best just trolled for new material.
Don't get me wrong. I love Trek. I love all of them. I don't think it deserved to be re-designed or thrown away. It could have lived a long and glorious life with new chapters written, hodged together with new ideas, new wit.
But as forward looking it was for its time, for as many social and racial barriers as ST broke, it was still of its time. Lots of which have been touched on in other posts more clearly and cogently then I could have.
ST has the opportunity to re-write its own history. To go boldly and not make the same mistakes. Granted it will make other mistakes. Maybe horrible ones. But isn't time paradox one of the staples of the SF genre? How interesting that a major canon is investing in such a huge amount of time and effort into using it on itself?
What ever the reasons, or justifications or inspiration, I heartily endorse the change.
Also? Quinto = Spock. That was freaky. Maybe best casting ever.
Now onto the OTHER distracting media:
THE NEW SHERLOCK HOLMES. Now with new and improved Holmes/Watson.

Go watch. Go now. I'll wait. *taps foot* *looks at watch*

Well?!? WAS I RIGHT? AWESOME. Totally terrible, not of the canon, but really awesome.
Also? Brett was a good Holmes. But to me? Rathbone was the man. Always was. Always will be. But hey, that's just me.
SPN? WHY CAN'T IT BE FALL NAO PLZ? BOYZ!
IPS - Totally in love with Mary. God, I love this show. Have no desire to fanfic it. Just really enjoy the show. Also? Love Albuquerque. Wouldn't mind ending up there, y'know? I'm thinking I'm getting a little tired of the big town.
Looking forward to:
Burn Notice. YAY.
Closer. Plz.
House. Sigh.
NCIS. GIBBS.
OMG,I have WAY too many media distractions. Which makes me want to take a little time to meditate on distraction, attachment and what am I trying to avoid thinking/feeling/seeing? Or, maybe...maybe it's just FUN.
Woot-ish.
Hai.

Date: 2009-05-20 04:33 am (UTC)I didn't even know Quinto, but he freaked me out because he looked so much like my oldest son. Not just "Oh, that guy sorta looks like Aaron" but every time he came on the screen I was all, "Oh! Hi, Aaron" Weird and distracting, but still excellent casting. And so much love for McCoy and even Pine as Kirk. And Scotty always was one of my favorite characters. I couldn't really get on board with the Spock/Uhura thing, but I did enjoy the joke about her first name. Overall, I haven't enjoyed a movie that much in years.
And I used to live in Albuquerque, actually. Graduated from the University of New Mexico there in 1984. I'm too much of a country gal, though. Even Albuquerque is too much city for me.
